I have recently alluded to the use of the Baltimore Catechism in the instruction of candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. I include below Lesson the Eleventh which deals with the Church. I post it because this is the topic I am presently covering with my daughter.

LESSON ELEVENTH: ON THE CHURCH

114. Q. Which are the means instituted by our Lord to enable men at all times to share in the fruits of the Redemption?

A. The means instituted by our Lord to enable men at all times to share in the fruits of His Redemption are the Church and the Sacraments.

LMS Holds Annual Requiem Mass in WestminsterCathedral

LMS AnnouncesIts 8^th Priest and Server Training Conference, Belmont Abbey,Hereford, 16-19th April 2012

To meet the continuing and growing demand for the Extraordinary Form, theLatin Mass Society will be organising another in its series of much-praised residentialtraining conferences for priests and servers wishing to learn Mass in the ususantiquior. On this occasion, it will be held at Belmont Abbey, Hereford,HR2 9RZ. This will be the eighth such conference organised by the LMS since2007, which has now trained well over 100 priests in the Extraordinary Form ofthe Mass. Bookings have already started to come in for the Belmont event.

Tuition, which will be given by experienced priests, will be tailored tosuit the needs of each priest. The conference will also be open to servers whowish to learn or improve their skills with the older form of the Mass.

The fee for attending is £120, inclusive of board and lodging at HedleyLodge, which is adjacent to the abbey. There is a concessionary rate availableof £60.

Hereford is closeto the motorway network and is easy and quick to get to from most parts ofEngland and Wales.

Rail: Hereford mainline station is two hours 50 minutes from London,around 90 minutes from Birmingham, two and half hours from Manchester, onehour from Cardiff and 90 minutes from Bristol.

Road: The M50 motorway (which connects from the M5) is about half an hour (orless) from Hereford. Belmont Abbey is about a mile and a half outside the cityof Hereford.

Handing on the Faith

The great synthesis begun by St.Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century may be said to have reached maturity in the 16thy century and the Council of Trent. An important distillation of the Council was the Roman Catechism, which, although designed for parish priests, catered for the spiritual education of all the faithful. The small catechisms that many of us grew up with, such as the famous Penny Catechism and the Baltimore Catechism, are direct descendants of the Roman Catechism. Even the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) follows the same basic format.

As I begin instructing my daughter in preparation for her Confirmation in November, I should like to share with you some of my methods in her instruction.

Which book(s)?

There are many good books available these days which adhere strictly to the Church's Magisterium. Personally I have adopted the Baltimore Catechism of 1885.

There are three versions available, depending on the age and level of understanding of the candidate. For Confirmation book 2 is probably about right. The method, like the Penny Catechism,follows a question and answer format. The idea however is not to teach by rote, but to unpack the answers and develop them as appropriate. I tend to teach for no more than about 20 minutes per day from the catechism. This teaching is then complemented by a further 15 or so minutes of Bible reading of appropriate passages. At the moment we are looking at the Fall and Original Sin, so the appropriate passages from Genesis were chosen. Also, once a week, we may look at a dvd from the well-known Bible series.

Finally, never forget that the best instruction of all is that given by attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Traditionalism is an Affirmation

One of the most important things for a person to have is an identity. This is why names are so important to us. Adam was given power to name things in the Garden of Eden, showing that he had dominion over the rest of creation, including Eve, whom he named. When a child finds out that a large, strange-looking animal has a name, he finds comfort in the fact, knowing that, if it has a name, and if Daddy can identify it, the thing must not be all that terrifying. It is known.

Traditional Catholics, or traditionalists, name themselves thus because of their embrace of the traditions of the Church. That they do so in the face of large-scale abandonment of those traditions by hierarchy, clergy, and faithful alike is why the name “Catholic” is not always adequate, though it should be. Beyond that very generic concept of what traditionalism is, there are manifold and disparate understandings of what exactly defines the identity of the traditionalist. Avoiding a rigid dogmatism where the Church has given us no dogmatic definition — we must be willing to die for Catholic dogma, but not for our own opinions — I would like to consider what traditionalism is in its essence.

Contrast clarifies the mind, so I will begin with what traditionalism is not. Traditionalism is not a negation. It is not a denial. It is not a finger-pointing followed by a “you’re wrong!” There is a name for that ideology: Protestantism. Protestantism is not a content, but an anti-content. It is not an affirmation, but a negation.

Certainly, the Catholic must assent to the Church’s condemnations as well as to her definitions, but a condemnation’s existence is contingent on two things: the truth that came first, and an error that denies truth. In other words, a condemnation, though good and necessary, only arises because some villain (perhaps Satan himself) concocted a denial of God’s truth. But God’s truth came first.

The texts of the Council of Trent provide us with an illustration of this. Trent affirms Catholic truth in its decrees, which are comparatively lengthy texts that explain Catholic doctrine in detail. At the end of those content-rich decrees, the Council then condemns various errors in its brief canons.

So, the short answer to the question concerning a traditionalist’s identity is that he is a Catholic who affirms the dogmatic truths, moral teachings, and liturgical traditions of the Church. This is substantial and primary. That he does so in the face of opposition, not only from the world, but from others calling themselves Catholic, is secondary and accidental. Let us not invert that order, lest we allow the enemy to dictate our identity to us.

A word about the quest for an identity: I believe it is a very modern thing, a product of the rootlessness of modern culture, which severs us from our traditions, our land, and our people. Modernity homogenizes us all, effectively uprooting local customs and cultures. The Catholic is a member of the universal Church, but he is not thereby a citizen of the universe. He is localized, and his encounter with the Faith is in the context of place, language, and custom. A Catholic from fourteenth-century France and his coreligionist from fourth-century Egypt possessed the same faith, morals, and religion (with priests, bishops, Mass, sacraments, etc.), but the variety of language, ritual, and custom was great.

That is as it should be. We receive the Faith locally. We live it in our families. We utter it in our own tongues. We practice it in this church building, with people from this community. (The Italian notion of campanilismo and the Carlist conception of fueros are cultural and political expressions of this.) The living out of the true Faith is what produces a Catholic culture, and that culture is what ought to impress itself on our young, forming their convictions, eliciting their actions, commanding their reactions. An identity — a genuine one, anyway — is forged in this organic fashion. We don’t put them on and take them off as an indecisive college student does his major. That is what the rootless, restless modern man does, and this is one cause of his insanity.

In our day, of course, the Faith is not being lived in places where it used to be. The Italian bell towers that give those in their hearing a sense of home still toll, but they often herald the offering of a bizarre liturgy, the preaching of a watered-down doctrine, and a religiosity of conformity to the standards of this world. So campanilismo, “spirit of the bell tower,” does not fully represent what it once did. The same is true elsewhere in the universal Church. Thus is it that traditionalists travel, sometimes great distances, for a traditional Mass, with the catechesis and culture that go with it.

But we can still do very much to live the Faith in our families and our communities. In doing so, we must resist the temptation to make traditionalism into an ideology, a reaction, or a negation of what other people do. Traditionalism is what we are, what we know, and what we do. Here, then, I will catalogue some of the things traditionalists affirm, or ought to affirm:

We affirm the Catholic Credo in all its integrity.

We affirm that the Catholic Church is the one bride of Christ, and that its Faith and its religion are the only divinely revealed ways to believe in and serve the living God. Consequently, the Catholic Church is the only path to salvation.

We affirm that divine truth is assailed by enemies of God’s Church, and that the faithful must “contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3).

We affirm the supernatural constitution of the Church, the natural hierarchy of the family, and the rule of Christ the King in society. To what degree we can, we will work to preserve or restore these things in our own families and communities; for the the world, the flesh, and the devil are undermining this order established by God.

We affirm that the Church’s public worship of God, her liturgy, has been handed down to us with great care by our fathers in the Faith. This has been done in a beautiful variety of rites. It is wrong to cast off these treasures of centuries of careful development under the protection of the Holy Ghost. Therefore, we will practice them, honor them, love them, and teach them to our children.

The authentic response to evil is a life of Christian virtue and holiness, which is none other than the faithful response to one’s primary vocation (the baptismal call to sanctity), lived according to the mode of his “secondary vocation” (i.e., priesthood, religious life, marriage, the single state in the world).

There is much that is dark and evil in life, but if we choose to allow ourselves to be consumed by it, then shame on us. Saint Paul notes that what we lost in Adam is far exceeded by what we gained in Christ (cf. Rom. 5:15ff). One need not have Faith to see wickedness and despair; they are too evident to the senses. The real marvel is the amount of good that actually exists, and that does take Faith to see: water regenerating sinners as God’s children and heirs to Heaven, God Himself coming down on our altars in the appearances of bread and wine, the Gospel being preached to the poor.

And that Gospel itself, the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! It is the “Good News”: good because it comes from the good God, and news, because it needs to be told.

We have a treasure in the Church’s traditional liturgy. We also have great commentaries on it, none better than Dom Gueranger’s Liturgical Year. We also have Holy Scripture, the writings of the Fathers and Doctors, and great intellectual and artistic monuments of Catholic culture that were born of Christian societies. All that we have, plus God Himself, the angels, the saints, and a promise of future glory if we persevere! And let us not forget that we have Our Lady, the Cause of All our Joy.

If, with all that, we need to go in search of an identity, or define it in purely negative terms against some other class of people, then we really have no clue what tradition is.

Book Review: The Latin Clerk, The Life, Work, and Travels of Adrian Fortescue, by Aidan Nichols, O.P.

Aidan Nichols is one of the foremost authors and theologians in the English-speaking world, having penned 40 titles, including the recent G.K. Chesterton, Theologian (2009), and From Hermes to Benedict XVI: Faith and Reason in Modern Catholic Thought (2009). A member of the Dominican Order, he now resides in Blackfriars, Cambridge. His latest offering is a biography of another priest, theologian and author, Fr. Adrian Fortescue 1874-1923 .

Fortescue is often thought of today as an icon of traditional Catholicism, but his traditionalist credentials are much more sublte. He was, for example quite unconvinced about the necessity of the infallibility of the papacy as expressed at the Vatican 1 Council, which led him into tension with the more conservative elements of the hierarchy. Fortescue was an expert in liturgy, having penned very influential tomes on the subject, 'Ceremonies Of The Roman Rite Described', and 'The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy'. Indeed, it could probably be said that he was the leading expert on the development of liturgy in the west. His knowledge however was not restricted to the Latin West and even as a priest he engaged in a flirtation with the orthodox Church, largely as a result of its beautiful liturgy, but decided in the end, tells Nichols, to remain a 'Latin clerk'.

Fortescue completed his studies for the priesthood at the Scots College in Rome and was ordained by the Prince Bishop Simon of Brixen, Austria, in 1898 Adrian Fortescue had an unusual upbringing. Schooled in Boulogne, and orphaned 12, he lived with an aunt in Wimbledon before going to the Scots College aged 17. Fortescue had knowledge of 11 languages and held three doctorates. In 1907 Fortescue was assigned the mission parish of St Hugh of Lincoln in Letchworth. He had the formidable task of organizing and supporting the new parish. His book, 'Ceremonies Of The Roman Rite Described' was written for £100. Needless to say the parish was soon blessed with magnificent liturgy.

Aidan Nichols admirably describes these different phases in the life of a quite enigmatic figure. Particularly after Summorum Pontificum, his life reveals tensions and stresses in the life of the Church which have parallels today. My only criticism is that I thought the book might perhaps have gone into more detail. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book, writtren in clear language and I heartily recommend it to all Catholics interested in the life and times of Adrian Fortescue.

Date of birth unknown; d. 31 December, 335. According to the "Liber pontificalis" (ed. Duchesne, I, 170) he was the son of a Roman named Rufinus; the legendary "Vita beati Sylvestri" calls his mother Justa. After the death of Miltiades (Melchiades), Sylvester was made Bishop of Rome and occupied this position twenty-one years. This was the era of Constantine the Great, when the public position of the Church so greatly improved, a change which must certainly have been very noticeable at Rome; it is consequently to be regretted that there is so little authoritative information concerning Sylvester's pontificate. At an early date legend brings him into close relationship wtih the first Christian emperor, but in a way that is contrary to historical fact. These legends were introduced especially into the "Vita beati Sylvestri" (Duchesne, loc. cit., Introd., cix sq.) which appeared in the East and has been preserved in Greek, Syriac, and Latin in the "Constitutum Sylvestri"—an apocryphal account of an alleged Roman council which belongs to the Symmachian forgeries and appeared between 501 and 508, and also in the "Donatio Constantini". The accounts given in all these writings concerning the persecution of Sylvester, the healing and baptism of Constantine, the emperor's gift to the pope, the rights granted to the latter, and the council of 275 bishops at Rome, are entirely legendary. The pope, however, took part in the negotiations concerning Arianism and the Council of Nicæa, and the expression ‘omooúsion was probably agreed upon with him before the council. The pontiff also sent legates to the first æcumenical council. Still it is not certain whether Constantine had arranged beforehand with Sylvester concerning the actual convening of the council, nor whether there was an express papal confirmation of the decrees beyond the signatures of the papal legates (cf. Funk in "Kirchengesch. Abhandlungen und Untersuchungen", I, 95, 501 sq.).
During Sylvester's pontificate were built the great churches founded at Rome by Constantine, e.g. the basilica and baptistery of the Lateran near the former imperial palace where the pope lived, the basilica of the Sessorian palace (Santa Croce), the Church of St. Peter in the Vatican, and several cemeterial churches over the graves of martyrs. No doubt the pope helped towards the construction of these churches. Sylvester's memory is especially connected with the titular Church of Equitius, which takes its name from a Roman presbyter who is said to have erected this church on his property. It was situated near the thermæ of Diocletian, and still exists. Parts of the present building may date from the fourth century. No doubt the pope contributed to the development of the liturgy of the Church at Rome. During his reign, moreover, the first martyrology of Roman martyrs was probably drawn up. Sylvester is connected also with the establishment of the Roman school of singing. on the Via Salaria he built a cemeterial church over the Catacomb of Priscilla, the ruins of which have lately been brought to light. In this church he was buried. His feast is given under 31 December in the "Depositio episcoporum", or list of the burial days of the Roman bishops, which was compiled barely a year after his death; the same date is given in the "Calendar" of Philocalus. This day, therefore, is doubtless the day of his burial.
